The man who worked on a novel before<\/em> clocking in for work. The freshly showered woman who brings a gym bag to<\/em> the office.<\/p>\n

These people aren\u2019t that different.<\/p>\n

Like working out, having a side project has manifold benefits for the person who makes the time and shows up for it. A side project gives us a sense of mastery, foments an atmosphere of growth, and for some, is the first stage of launching their next career.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how to find the time and the energy to work on your side gig (while keeping your commitment to your full-time job\/significant other\/yoga practice\/Netflix habit). And if you don\u2019t have a side project just yet, here\u2019s how to start by playing around with what you\u2019re good at.<\/p>\n

1. Follow what you\u2019re curious about<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Melody Wilding<\/a>, a licensed therapist in New York City who focuses on clients in the first 10 years of their career, reveals a commonality between people in their late 20s to 50s.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsually when we\u2019re in this life phase,\u201d she explains, \u201cone of your basic developmental drives is to start creating meaning and purpose for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

In order to accomplish that, Wilding advises you to \u201cfollow the one thing that you\u2019re even slightly curious about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPassion is something that unfolds,\u201d she says. \u201cPassion needs a certain environment to thrive.”<\/p>\n

And how\u00a0does that happen?<\/p>\n

By “devoting time, attention, and resources to it,” says Wilding. “The feeling of wanting to start a business or do something on the side has some personal meaning to you, so follow it, go for it, nurture that.\u201d<\/p>\n

2. Schedule \u2018side project time\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Try waking up an hour early a few days for one week, scheduling \u201cyou\u201d in your iCal on Wednesday from 8 pm to 10 pm, and keeping a Sunday afternoon free once a month. Experiment with when you\u2019re most productive. That window may then become inherently motivating.<\/p>\n

Jenny Blake<\/a>, an author and career coach, says that \u201cpart of what makes the side project compelling is that we don\u2019t have all day, every day to work on it. That can create just enough pressure to motivate us, if done in the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before she pivoted careers, Blake worked full-time at Google and wrote her first book on weekends.<\/p>\n

\u201cIncremental progress accumulates,\u201d she explains. \u201cIf you do something 10 minutes every day or for an hour twice a week, you might be amazed by what you can accomplish.\u201d<\/p>\n

3. Change your language, change your life<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wilding says that the way people talk about their packed schedules doesn\u2019t help their passion project blossom.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople perceive their hustle as \u2018Oh my god, I have no time,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cBy speaking about it negatively, you\u2019re confirming a negative association about your side hustle to yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do you constantly tell others that you\u2019re \u201ccrazy busy?\u201d Reframe it: \u201cI\u2019m a hustler who is energized by everything I have going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Make a \u2018passion project to-do list\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is preparation for days when you\u2019re ready to carpe the diem, and for evenings when you\u2019ve scheduled \u201cpassion project\u201d time and you\u2019re not feeling it. You\u2019ll know where to start.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a menu to choose from when you\u2019re in different energy places,\u201d says Wilding, giving an example: \u201cIf you\u2019re like, \u2018I can\u2019t write a 500-word blog post tonight, but I can read three chapters in a book or do some maintenance work on my website.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Capture your great ideas<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just as you wouldn\u2019t leave the house without your keys, don\u2019t head out into the world without a system for capturing great ideas when they come to you spontaneously.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur subconscious is working for us all the time,\u201d says Blake. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s setting a project down that will make an idea pop up.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, have a way to capture it: a Moleskine notebook, your iPhone notes, Evernote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the true vetting of an idea,\u201d says Blake. \u201cWhen you come back to it, in a day or two, does it still inspire you?\u201d<\/p>\n
