Yuravlivker was hoping for cohesive, easy-to-learn course material, but what the new hires created wasn\u2019t usable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest mistake we\u2019ve made as a company was putting our trust in individuals who looked good on paper, but were hard-pressed to produce the results and materials we needed,\u201d says Yuravlivker. \u201cWe paid people a lot of money before we realized that the traits we valued most weren\u2019t the most valuable traits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/one-startups-biggest-mistake-and-how-it-bounced-forward\/attachment\/october-15-2015_img_5189\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17119\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17119\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/October-15-2015_IMG_5189.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"One Company\u2019s Biggest Mistake\u2014And How It \u2018Bounced Forward\u2019 \" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yuravlivker and co-founder Dmitri Adler let go all of their original employees and took on the content creation themselves, releasing new courses every month. They have hired new part-time employees, but now they spend more time walking them through the material so they have more of an idea of what is needed for the finished product.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/one-startups-biggest-mistake-and-how-it-bounced-forward\/attachment\/october-15-2015_img_5192\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17121\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-17121 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/October-15-2015_IMG_5192.jpg?resize=267%2C401\" alt=\"One Company\u2019s Biggest Mistake\u2014And How It \u2018Bounced Forward\u2019 \" width=\"267\" height=\"401\"><\/a>\u201cI wouldn&#8217;t necessarily say that we bounced back, but rather that we &#8216;bounced forward,&#8217;\u201d Yuravlivker says. \u201cWe are lucky that we had enough capital and grit to keep our business afloat and we reevaluated the type of person we wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said that what they were originally looking for\u2014such as a great resume\u2014aren\u2019t as important as other characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, instead of looking at degrees on paper, we talk to individuals to find out their thought process, how they problem-solve, and where their passions lie,\u201d she says. \u201cEven if the individual doesn&#8217;t know everything yet, these are the people who can pick the skills up quickly and contribute in a meaningful way on whatever project they&#8217;re working on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photo credit: Foster White<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you decide whether someone is the right hire for your startup?
