That\u2019s what Rohan Dhir, founder of London-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archibaldoptics.com\/\">Archibald Optics<\/a>, discovered while he was traveling the world to research how to launch his line of high-end eyewear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Italy I saw boxes of brand-name eyewear shipped in from China,\u201d says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/london\/devonshire-square\">WeWork Devonshire<\/a> member. \u201cThe workers put in two screws and then stamped them \u2018Made in Italy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dhir had dreamed of capturing the European market by selling designer eyewear for $99\u2014the same way that Warby Parker did in the U.S.\u2014but was crestfallen to realize that it probably wasn\u2019t possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t want to make a product of that caliber,\u201d he admits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/how-archibald-optics-is-not-the-next-warby-parker-for-eyewear\/attachment\/devonshire-sq-archibald-optics-10\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16955\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16955\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/Devonshire-Sq-Archibald-Optics-10.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"How Archibald Optics Is Not The Next Warby Parker For Eyewear\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"handcrafted-glasses\"><b>Handcrafted Glasses<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>As Dhir drowned his sorrows at a hotel bar in Shanghai, a Scottish business executive named Larry Archibald asked him what his problem was. Dhir opened up about his failed business idea.<\/p>\n<p>Archibald\u2014who Dhir says he now considers his mentor\u2014asked him a question that forever changed his life: \u201cWhy does it have to be $99?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Dhir realized his product was going to be nothing like Warby Parker. Instead of targeting the lower end of the market, he\u2019d go for high-end shoppers who usually pay hundreds for designer glasses from Oliver Peoples or Cutler and Gross. For a fraction of that price he could offer a product from Japan\u2014handcrafted there, not just assembled from parts made elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/how-archibald-optics-is-not-the-next-warby-parker-for-eyewear\/attachment\/devonshire-sq-archibald-optics-8\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16953\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-16953 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/Devonshire-Sq-Archibald-Optics-8.jpg?resize=439%2C659\" alt=\"Devonshire Sq - Archibald Optics-8\" width=\"439\" height=\"659\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you seen <em>Jiro Dreams of Sushi<\/em>?\u201d Dhir asked. \u201cThink of Jiro making glasses. There\u2019s a team of these craftsmen we found who have became so good at their trade over a century that companies come from all over the world to get their glasses done by them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, Dhir and his team of 10 full-time staffers sell these glasses throughout the United Kingdom. They\u2019ve recently expanded distribution to include the U.S.\u2014taking on Warby Parker on its own turf.<\/p>\n<p>Dhir says he still gets his best advice from Archibald, who urged him to have a long-term vision for growth so that he wouldn\u2019t panic on days when things didn\u2019t seem to be going as planned. After all, it takes time for an idea to take flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had a very tough ride,\u201d Dhir says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s been a massive learning curve. There are moments where you just think it\u2019s not going to work, but then later on it eventually works. Fight for your startup like it\u2019s your baby, but also learn to take a step back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/how-archibald-optics-is-not-the-next-warby-parker-for-eyewear\/attachment\/devonshire-sq-archibald-optics-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16956\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16956\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/Devonshire-Sq-Archibald-Optics-1.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"How Archibald Optics Is Not The Next Warby Parker For Eyewear\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dhir says he\u2019s learned not to compromise his values in order to secure that one big deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the end, go with your gut,\u201d Dhir says. \u201cIt has seriously saved us from a lot of pitfalls and money wasted.
