The WeWork co-founder has no problem talking to people one-on-one, or even addressing big crowds. But when it\u2019s just his disembodied voice on the screen? That\u2019s something he isn\u2019t so sure about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut maybe I have, like, the ability to express myself authentically,\u201d McKelvey says, thinking out loud. \u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it: authenticity. The word\u2019s been played out in recent years, but it works whenever McKelvey uses it, especially since the 41-year-old chief creative officer is guided by the same set of beliefs he had growing up in Eugene, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>He recalls a golden era growing up in the Pacific Northwest: the result of the booming timber industry. But in the \u201980s, all of that changed\u2014a recession brought with it a string of shuttered storefronts in Eugene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always felt that meant there was an opportunity,\u201d he says. \u201cI would say, \u2018Mom, we could open something in those storefronts.\u2019 That was always my attitude: not that it was sad or terrible, but that somebody\u2019s gotta do something about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He inherited this attitude from his mother, Lucia, who, along with her four best friends, founded an alternative weekly newspaper called <em>What&#8217;s Happening, <\/em>which later became the <em>Eugene Weekly<\/em>. McKelvey says he found inspiration in these \u201cincredibly strong\u201d women.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They were starting a newspaper because they all wanted to do something that would affect their community in a positive way,\u201d McKelvey says. \u201cIt was totally authentic to just who they were as people. There was no \u2018We have a business plan, and we want to make money, and we need an exit strategy.\u2019 It was like, \u2018We\u2019re on a journey, and this is the part of the journey that makes sense in this moment for us.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/in-the-moment-with-weworks-miguel-mckelvey\/attachment\/20150416-citibike-and-hudson-sutler-miguel-mckelvey-12\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16880\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16880\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/20150416-CitiBike-and-Hudson-Sutler-Miguel-McKelvey-12.jpg?resize=1280%2C854\" alt=\"In the Moment with WeWork\u2019s Miguel McKelvey \" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>McKelvey\u2019s own journey took an unexpected turn when he was taking a sculpture class at Colorado College. When a professor commented that his work was \u201carchitectural,\u201d McKelvey reconsidered what he was studying.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When he said that, it changed my whole idea about where I was going with my future,&#8221; says McKelvey, who soon transferred to the\u00a0University of Oregon&#8217;s School of Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>There was one problem: he hadn\u2019t studied architecture before, so he didn\u2019t know the major players or which buildings were supposed to be important.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never knew that stuff going into it,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I didn\u2019t have any preconceptions about anything really.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So before entering the program, McKelvey hit the library for a little research. Picking up books at random, he connected with two groundbreaking architects: Le Corbusier and Frank Gehry. He fell for the iconic curved facade of the Guggenheim Museum that Gehry designed in Bilbao, Spain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe created a brand for a city almost, with a museum, because the building was so profoundly different than anything that had ever been done before,\u201d says McKelvey. \u201cWatching that happen became, what seemed to me, much more interesting than just the idea that a building is a singular thing that exists in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several years after graduating, he moved to New York, where he worked at an architecture firm. There he served as store designer for American Apparel\u2014good experience for his work at WeWork, which he founded with his friend Adam Neumann.<\/p>\n<p>McKelvey is responsible for the look and feel of each of the 55 WeWork buildings. Although the number of buildings has been growing so rapidly that he hasn\u2019t been able to travel to each (\u201cand that\u2019s painful, super painful for me\u201d), McKelvey works with his team to add special touches to each location so that people continually feel engaged: neon signs with inspirational sayings, murals by cutting-edge artists, and wild and fun wallpaper.<\/p>\n<p>Five years have passed (the same age as McKelvey&#8217;s son Quentin), and McKelvey\u2019s feelings about the collaborative workspace\u2019s mission haven\u2019t changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy fundamental feeling,\u201d says McKelvey, \u201chas been from the very beginning the same as it is today: that it\u2019s our responsibility to make spaces that people feel happy in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photographs by Lauren Kallen<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a Friday afternoon, and Miguel McKelvey has a \u201cstrange feeling\u201d about a voiceover he\u2019s just recorded for a video.
