Every day there seems to be a new story about an overworked office slave who broke free and now lives an inspirational life of travel. Or someone who quit their job to travel in an RV<\/a>. Or a tiny house<\/a>. Or a couple whose travel blog<\/a> supports their vagabonding.<\/p>\n

It sounds nice, doesn\u2019t it? Save some money, then spend your days in sun-soaked Spain or meeting fellow ex-pats in South America. But blog posts and social media can be deceiving. The harsh reality is that quitting your job to travel isn\u2019t as easy as getting a WordPress site and a selfie stick.<\/p>\n

Just ask Chanel Cartell and Stevo Dirnberger, who quit their advertising jobs to travel, and wound up scrubbing toilets<\/a> to be able to eat.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s it really<\/em> like to leave it all behind and live an international life of leisure? We asked some travelers who\u2019ve made the jump to weigh in on some of the realities they\u2019ve faced.<\/p>\n

For most, the obvious was most important: financial planning. But there are other things to consider as well, from psychological effects to adjusting to uncertainty. While nearly everyone we spoke to was grateful for the experience they\u2019d had, and glad they made the decision to travel, some of their experiences might be cause for pause if you\u2019re thinking about taking the leap yourself.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re dreaming about leaving it all to travel, start saving right now, and keep these considerations in mind:<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll never really feel settled<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt does get stressful trying to figure out where you\u2019re staying next and constantly unpacking and packing,\u201d says Steph De La Garza, who left a two-decade-long career in IT to travel. She chronicled her preparation for long-term travel in her book, Two Brauds Abroad<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

De La Garza has stretched her travel dollars significantly by taking on housesitting gigs or odd jobs in exchange for a room. She estimates she\u2019s lived at least 25 months rent-free, but admits that she\u2019s grown tired of never staying in one place very long.<\/p>\n

\u201cI miss not having a home that I can decorate, and I\u2019m really tired of sleeping in uncomfortable beds,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Issues at home can pull you back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andrew Davis, author of Magic Travel Blog<\/a>, is currently on his third long-term travel stint. His first two trips were cut short when issues at home, including death in the family and tenant problems at his apartment, called him back.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tenant in my apartment back in Perth decided to stop paying rent,\u201d he remembers about the first time he hit the road. \u201cAfter a year, I moved back into my parents\u2019 home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lesson Davis learned? \u201cIf you are renting out a property,\u201d he says, \u201cget landlord insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Losing touch with \u201chome\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Greg Rodgers didn\u2019t have any international travel experience when he quit his job at IBM in 2006 and bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok. Now, he writes about the \u201clocation independent\u201d lifestyle on his site, StartBackpacking.com<\/a>, and is working on a book on the subject.<\/p>\n

But this lifestyle, says Greg, comes with a healthy amount of \u201cthe bad and the ugly\u201d along with the good.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most unexpected challenges are the quiet ones that people don\u2019t often talk about,\u201d he explains. \u201cThere are psychological aspects of dealing with the widening rift between you and loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says that the nomadic life becomes a Catch-22.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter too much time on the road, you find that you aren\u2019t really \u2018at home\u2019 anywhere\u2014including your hometown,\u201d he says. \u201cThe only solution seems to be to keep moving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Friends and family won\u2019t understand<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s terribly lonely out there, as friends and family from back home don\u2019t understand this lifestyle and won\u2019t be receptive to any complaints,\u201d says Paul Kortman, who travels the world with his wife and four children.<\/p>\n

Kortman runs the site NomadTogether.com<\/a>, a community for traveling families.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a growing minority out there of families who think and live like this,\u201d he says, recognizing that families who live on the road encounter different challenges than individuals. \u201cWe can empathize, and help.\u201d<\/p>\n

No regular paycheck<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Suzanne Wolko hit the road after a job layoff this year, she planned on writing a travel blog and picking up freelance work. \u201cI planned on being that nomadic travel blogger I read about, bouncing from city to city, enjoying cafes and writing my stories,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reality is that I failed miserably,\u201d she admits, noting that she had a hard time finding time to write or a Wi-Fi connection to regularly update her blog<\/a>. And though she had vacation savings, points, and friends\u2019 houses to stay at, living without a regular paycheck was a tough adjustment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the heart of it, I was unemployed and worried about money and spending every day,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

After a few months of \u201ctravel sabbatical,\u201d Wolko returned to Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy taste of travel freedom from this experience made me realize that it\u2019s okay to have a full-time job, a mortgage, and savor your vacation time,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Work can be a challenge<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTo return to a regular job, even if it\u2019s merely to help me save for the next adventure, can be very frustrating and depressing,\u201d says Kimberly Blagrove. \u201cYou become all too aware of the fact that you\u2019re in a cage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blagrove, a self-defined \u201cextended traveler\u201d since 2009, takes annual trips to Europe, usually for one to four months at a time.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time I leave, I hope to figure out how to stay for longer,\u201d she says. \u201cBut I always end up returning stateside where I accept contract work and plot to leave again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you do<\/em> take the leap and follow your hunch, it doesn\u2019t mean things will work out as smoothly or quickly as you\u2019d like,\u201d advises Travis Levius, who wound up broke and homeless in London after quitting his teaching job in Atlanta. \u201cI felt like my inner gut failed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, after months of sleeping on couches and chasing work, Levius landed a job as a freelance travel writer and editor. His new job is now what he left his old job to do.<\/p>\n
