{"id":16282,"date":"2015-09-01T23:00:41","date_gmt":"2015-09-02T03:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=16282"},"modified":"2020-03-30T23:19:25","modified_gmt":"2020-03-31T03:19:25","slug":"for-two-menswear-entrepreneurs-its-us-against-the-big-guys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/for-two-menswear-entrepreneurs-its-us-against-the-big-guys","title":{"rendered":"For two menswear entrepreneurs, it\u2019s &#8216;us against the big guys&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bryan Davis never would\u2019ve predicted he\u2019d be selling shirts for a living.<\/p>\n<p>After moving from the Midwest to New York for college, Davis worked as a managing partner in the nightclub and restaurant scene, but decided that he wasn\u2019t fond of the lifestyle or the hours.<\/p>\n<p>During a trip to Thailand in 2007, he observed how Bangkok police officers wore what seemed like typical buttoned-down shirts, but they actually used zippers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had never seen that before,\u201d says Davis. \u201cI made a police uniform for myself, and I brought it back and showed it to some friends in fashion. People went crazy because they had never seen it before, either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even then, the idea of commercializing his shirt design stayed on the back burner for some time while Davis worked on other startups. But in late 2014, he launched his company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teddystratford.com\/\">Teddy Stratford<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/soho-west\">WeWork Soho West<\/a>, bringing the \u201czip-fit\u201d shirt to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/for-two-menswear-entrepreneurs-its-us-against-the-big-guys\/attachment\/20150723-woodies-and-teddy-stratford-19\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16308\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/20150723-Woodies-and-Teddy-Stratford-19.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"For Two Menswear Entrepreneurs, It\u2019s \u2018Us Against the Big Guys\u2019  Teddy Stratford\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Canada native Jacob Wood has worked almost exclusively in menswear. He interned at several apparel companies, and after college was a buyer of men\u2019s suits at Macy\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Although Wood always had an eye on entrepreneurship, it was only after being fed up with working for huge corporations that he decided to go into business for himself. His goal at <a href=\"http:\/\/woodiesclo.com\/\">Woodies<\/a>? Moving beyond the standardized sizes for men\u2019s business shirts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWoodies was founded on the idea that getting something made specifically for you has never made more sense and has never been more easy than it is today,\u201d says Wood, founder of the custom fitted shirt company.<\/p>\n<p>He started his business in 2014, only a few floors away from Teddy Stratford. It only made sense for these entrepreneurs to cross paths at some point. After all, both produced men\u2019s shirts and both started with crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/for-two-menswear-entrepreneurs-its-us-against-the-big-guys\/attachment\/150116_woodies-24805-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16309\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/150116_Woodies-24805-1.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"For Two Menswear Entrepreneurs, It\u2019s \u2018Us Against the Big Guys\u2019 Woodies Clothing\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Daniel O\u2019 Duffy, the WeWork Labs Community Manager at the time, arranged for Davis, who was then starting his own campaign, to gain insight on Wood\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJacob said, \u2018Before you launch, get everyone who you think is going to back you, and have a personal conversation asking them to back you within the first day,\u2019\u201d Davis says. \u201cThat initial momentum is very important. The Kickstarter magic starts to happen when you bust out from the circle of friends.<\/p>\n<p>The magic came quickly for Davis. Within two days, Teddy Stratford\u2019s Kickstarter campaign was fully funded. The one-off collaborative effort, Davis and Wood both say, has grown into a friendship, and the two continue to discuss fabrics, production, and customer relations, even after Davis and his team relocated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/chelsea\">WeWork Chelsea<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n<p>The friendship has also included some irony: Woodies recently ran a second Kickstarter campaign, and Davis found himself being consulted about <em>his<\/em> success, recommending agencies and mailing lists for Kickstarter backers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/for-two-menswear-entrepreneurs-its-us-against-the-big-guys\/attachment\/20150723-woodies-and-teddy-stratford-10\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16310\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/20150723-Woodies-and-Teddy-Stratford-10.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\" For Two Menswear Entrepreneurs, It\u2019s \u2018Us Against the Big Guys\u2019\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe definitely work off each other\u2019s strengths,\u201d says Wood.<\/p>\n<p>Although the two entrepreneurs might seem like natural competitors, Wood and Davis believe that collaboration is far more important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world is huge, and people need more than one shirt,\u201d says Davis. \u201cI can see someone who has a couple of Jacob\u2019s shirts having a couple of my shirts.
