{"id":16129,"date":"2015-08-24T21:00:18","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T01:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=16129"},"modified":"2020-03-30T18:28:10","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T22:28:10","slug":"riposte-magazine-smart-reads-for-smart-women-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/professional-development\/riposte-magazine-smart-reads-for-smart-women-2","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Riposte&#8217; magazine: smart reads for smart women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes it takes a new spin on things to make us realize what we\u2019ve been missing all along. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ripostemagazine.com\/\">Riposte<\/a> is the only title on the shelves that calls itself \u201ca smart magazine for women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danielle Pender, its editor-in-chief, started the beautifully designed London-based magazine because she had noticed that she couldn\u2019t find what she wanted to read in many women\u2019s magazines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI read men\u2019s magazines more often, just because there were different things on the cover,\u201d she explains. As a result, she started a women\u2019s magazine that would go beyond the scope of just beauty, fashion, and relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the fourth issue of the biannual magazine, <em>Riposte<\/em> clearly believes that smart women mostly want to read about other smart women. This latest issue features, among others, a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, a foreign correspondent who\u2019s been in the business for more than 25 years, a fashion writer, and a stuntwoman. Pender attributes <em>Riposte<\/em>\u2019s content to the principle of \u201cif you can\u2019t see it, you can\u2019t achieve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/riposte-magazine-smart-reads-for-smart-women-2\/attachment\/danielle-pender\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16130\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-16130 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/Danielle-Pender.jpg?resize=418%2C418\" alt=\"Riposte Magazine: Smart Reads for Smart Women Danielle Pender\" width=\"418\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was young, I didn\u2019t realize that I could do all these jobs that we have featured in the magazine,\u201d Pender says, \u201cso now we want to show younger girls that these paths are open to them. We want to give them a sense that they\u2019re meeting these women, and getting insights in how they have achieved what they have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Pender has scored a couple of achievements of her own: <em>Riposte <\/em>was nominated for a design of the year award from the London Design Museum, and won a gold medal from the European Design Awards. It\u2019s also caught on with U.S. audiences, available at bookstores in Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, New York, and Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Every issue features everything from thoughtful essays to profiles of iconic figures, though the backbone consists of various \u201cmeetings\u201d with women of achievement. Each of them follows this line of questioning: How did you start out, how did you get to where you are, and what were the little failures you experienced along the way?<\/p>\n<p>Maintaining a feeling of intimacy is an important factor for Pender.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/riposte-magazine-smart-reads-for-smart-women-2\/attachment\/spread_17\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16134\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16134\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/Spread_17.jpg?resize=3000%2C2250\" alt=\"Riposte Magazine: Smart Reads for Smart Women \" width=\"3000\" height=\"2250\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted the meetings to read like you were sitting on the sofa and having a real conversation,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>However, the failures remain small and formulaic, as if they only serve to further emphasize the awesomeness of the subjects. Fashion writer Susie Bubble\u2019s style is \u201ca madcap collision that is daring, loud, and pulsating with creativity.\u201d Singer Eno Williams is described as \u201ca bird of paradise amongst a flock of sparrows.\u201d In describing Williams\u2019 moments of weakness, the writer was quoted saying, \u201cthere have been moments of ups and downs, but I always try to look toward that light at the end of the tunnel.\u201d I wondered how many of these similar profiles of greatness women would actually like to read. The most interesting piece in the latest issue is actually a probing piece on how parents should raise their boys in our current cultural climate.<\/p>\n<p>Every woman should be taken seriously, whether they are or are not smart, brave, and awesome. However, in a time when many women\u2019s magazines have turned into trade journals for the fashion and beauty industry, it is a brave step for <em>Riposte<\/em> to assume their readers are smarter than that. Women\u2019s voices might still need to be oversold in order to be heard, but at the same time, we also need to cut ourselves some slack.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of our conversation, I ask Pender what her next step is. She replies, \u201cI need to buy some sticky envelopes. And I need to buy some toys for my baby.
