This was more than three years ago. The WeWork veteran is now a beloved Community Manager at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/soho-west\">Soho West<\/a> location, albeit he\u2019s more famous around the offices as a fitness guru.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph\u2019s Fitness Bootcamps are now incredibly popular. Held at Pier 40, they are frequented by regulars and new faces alike. In the beginning, however, they were born out of a simple need to feel more energized throughout the workday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt started just doing stairs workouts in the office, when I grabbed four to five members to do exercises up and down the stairwell. On every flight, there was a new movement challenge, and then we repeated it on the way down,\u201d says Joseph. \u201cEventually, it got too crowded, and we ended up blocking the whole stairwell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joseph says he came to WeWork management with an idea to expand the workout to a more regular space and time, and was met with enthusiasm right away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI basically just spoke to my team, we did one trial session, and then we just ran with it,\u201d says Joseph. The loyal following has been growing ever since.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a community manager, I\u2019m always interacting with members. I\u2019m here for their well-being\u2014to help them grow as a person and to help them grow their business as well,\u201d he explains. \u201cHealth is 100 percent essential to growing your startup. Getting active can be very beneficial, especially for people just starting their own companies who are often putting in 12 to 15 hours per day. Being at your desk for that long period of time is very draining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat down with Joseph to discuss his top five tips for staying healthier in the workplace. Check out the directives below to energize your mind <em>and<\/em> body for your best work yet.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1-take-walking-meetings\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/fitness-guru-johnson-josephs-5-healthy-workplace-habits\/attachment\/20140823-summer-camp-johnsons-bootcamp-13\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16061\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16061\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/20140823-Summer-Camp-Johnsons-Bootcamp-13.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"Fitness Guru Johnson Joseph\u2019s 5 Healthy Workplace Habits \" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a>1.\u00a0<strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Take walking meetings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t always have to be in a conference room setting,\u201d says Joseph. \u201cSometimes, active meetings can be even more productive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By moving around with a client or colleague, you can collaborate successfully while also energizing your body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet outside and get some Vitamin D in your system,\u201d says Joseph. An added plus: walking meetings require you to pay attention, both to where you\u2019re going and what your partner is saying.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2-get-up\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">2. Get up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to Joseph, you should get up and move around at least three times per hour. While getting work tunnel vision and sitting still for hours may feel productive, in reality, the body and mind need a break every once in a while. Instead of taking a Facebook break every 20 minutes, get up and walk around, whether it\u2019s to get coffee, water, a snack, or just to make quick rounds around the office.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-mix-up-lunch\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">3. Mix up lunch<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Joseph recommends a BYOL rather than ordering take-out every day. It\u2019s a move that cuts down both cost and calories, since you can control the ingredients of a homemade meal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should switch it up from time to time, though,\u201d says Joseph, \u201cto keep it fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you make a chicken salad one day, repurpose the extra ingredients into a wrap the next day. The key to keeping healthy eating enjoyable is variety. If you forget to prepare a meal in advance, Joseph recommends walking a few more blocks than usual to explore a new spot rather than defaulting to the cafe next door.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/fitness-guru-johnson-josephs-5-healthy-workplace-habits\/attachment\/20140823-summer-camp-johnsons-bootcamp-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16063\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16063\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/20140823-Summer-Camp-Johnsons-Bootcamp-2.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"Fitness Guru Johnson Joseph\u2019s 5 Healthy Workplace Habits \" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-get-creative-with-your-surroundings\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">4. Get creative with your surroundings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSitting at a desk all day isn\u2019t an excuse not to exercise,\u201d says Joseph. \u201cThere\u2019s always a way to use your surroundings. Use your desk to do incline pushups, or do leg lifts over a file cabinet \u2014 there\u2019s a million ways to be active even just at your desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of working your body as well as your mind throughout the day will be evident in your work. Getting active will feed back positively into your mindset, and energize you to do your best work.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-get-social\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">5. Get social<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cMental health in the workplace is just as important as physical health,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cAs a community manager, I see my job as helping to foster an all-around healthy workplace lifestyle for our members, and that includes their mood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson encourages members to chat with each other at mealtime, or take a trip around the office to check in with workplace buddies. Getting a little human contact in can lift your spirits when you\u2019re facing a stressful day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re really feeling overwhelmed, call a friend,\u201d says Joseph. \u201cJust hearing a friendly voice can give you a real pick-me-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Feeding off the energy he gets from interacting with WeWork members, Joseph has been inspired to start a business himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a platform that allows users to train with trainers remotely, anywhere\u2014whether it\u2019s an office space, a home, or if they\u2019re traveling in a hotel,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The nascent startup, called WeHERE Fitness, is dedicated to the lessons Joseph has learned being surrounded by entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love coming to work every day, and I\u2019m really motivated by the energy here,\u201d says Joseph. \u201cBeing at WeWork, it\u2019s hard not to get inspired by the energy.
