From an early age, Mon\u00e9 McLucas knew that she had good people skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom calls me a social butterfly,\u201d she says with a smile. \u201cWe knew when I was pretty young that I wouldn\u2019t have a problem interacting and engaging with people\u2014that\u2019s one of my gifts.\u201d<\/p>\n

For her current job, that personality type comes in handy. McLucas and her colleague, Morgan Woodhouse, work for the talent-mobility cloud platform MOVE Guides<\/a>. They\u2019re known as \u201cMove Advocates,\u201d meaning they\u2019re the dedicated point people for employees being relocated to a different city.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get people who are just, \u2018this is no big deal,\u2019 who\u2019ve done this many times before,\u201d says Woodhouse. \u201cAnd then you get people for whom this is just the biggest deal in the world, and you\u2019re holding their hand throughout the whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both McLucas and Woodhouse have themselves been relocated\u2014the former from Santa Barbara, where she originally worked in real estate sales, and the latter from Maine, where she grew up and attended college. Coming to San Francisco for their jobs has entailed more than its fair share of culture shock. They both work out of WeWork Transbay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a totally different lifestyle here,\u201d says McLucas, whose Southern California roots haven\u2019t prepared her for life in the Bay Area. \u201cI\u2019m just enjoying all the city has to offer. I don\u2019t even think I\u2019ve scraped the surface of what\u2019s here, what\u2019s available.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodhouse is of the same mindset.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been here for six months now, which has flown by, and I still feel like I\u2019m pretty new, but it\u2019s an incredible city,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd there\u2019s no Maine winter, so that makes it that much better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since their jobs require them to work directly with people undergoing similar transitions, their experience with the process has been a valuable asset.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tell people that I just moved here, so we have an instant connection,\u201d Woodhouse says. \u201cIf they\u2019re really nervous, we can help them feel comfortable with all the knowledge we have.\u201d<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s more to relocation services than just being able to step into a client\u2019s shoes. The profession also requires a certain outlook, a commitment to assisting others that Woodhouse says is key to success.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking for people that want to provide a \u2018we\u2019re here to help you\u2019 energy, to take the stress out of someone\u2019s move, to make it as seamless as possible,\u201d says Woodhouse. \u201cSo if we just come forward with that attitude, that really is something that sets MOVE Guides apart from other relocation companies.\u201d<\/p>\n

And make no mistake\u2014their job involves much more than a few phone calls every now and then. They\u2019re in charge of finding temporary housing, providing city transportation guides, making sure their clients\u2019 belongings are properly transported, and numerous other services tailored to the needs of each employee or family. They work with people at all levels of a company\u2019s power structure, from the lowest rungs to the top brass.<\/p>\n

McLucas\u2019s favorite type of client?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe interns,\u201d she says. \u201cThis is their first time out, they\u2019ve just graduated, and you\u2019ve got this company who\u2019s providing them with a great relocation package.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

You\u2019d think that with a career as demanding as theirs, it would be difficult to strike a good work-life balance. But the advantage of working for a global company is that someone\u2014whether in Hong Kong<\/a>, London<\/a>, or any of the company\u2019s other offices\u2014is always on call, ready to respond to an employee\u2019s concerns. After McLucas and Woodhouse leave work at 6 p.m., their phones stay pretty quiet, allowing them to have some fun and build a sense of community with their co-workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very social,\u201d says McLucas. \u201cI like to say that we\u2019re the MOVE Guides family\u2014we spend a lot of time out of the office, because all of us have relocated to the San Francisco<\/a> area and left our families. I think all next week, we\u2019re booked\u2014everything from Bocce Club to just going out to dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woodhouse agrees. \u201cI think that\u2019s important,\u201d she says, \u201cespecially in a growing company or a startup, to just be able to work hard while you\u2019re at work, but to get to know each other outside of work as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

In their free time, McLucas and Woodhouse are immersing themselves in their new environment, carving out their San Francisco niches. Woodhouse, who played soccer in college, is scoping out a league, as well as taking advantage of nearby hiking trails.<\/p>\n

And McLucas? \u201cMy passion is working with youth,\u201d she says, \u201cso I do a lot of volunteer work here twice a week.\u201d For someone who makes a living interacting with stressed-out, disoriented employees\u2014with babes in the woods, so to speak\u2014that should come as no surprise.<\/p>\n
