The American Society of News Editors<a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/news\/mediawire\/360633\/newspaper-industry-lost-3800-full-time-editorial-professionals-in-2014\/\"> released<\/a> the dour news that in traditional newsrooms, \u201cjob losses accelerated in 2014, falling by more than 10 percent in a single year.\u201d The forecast is just as bad for 2015, with \u201cadditional losses clearly taking place so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Out of crisis comes opportunity, though, and Amanda Gutterman is just the person to seize it. She and her team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slantnews.com\"><em>Slant News<\/em><\/a> are coming at the world of media with new ideas about the editorial process and the payment process.<\/p>\n<p>There are several things that make <em>Slant<\/em> unique in the world of media, but what Gutterman wants to talk about up front is the money. <em>Slant <\/em>works on a per-click model, meaning that after an initial payment, writers get paid bonuses.<\/p>\n<p>Gutterman explains the publishing world is split into feast and famine, at least as far as writers are concerned. On the one hand, you have websites willing to throw anything and everything online, depression the value of content. On the other hand, you have older, traditional outlets that are more curated but can be very difficult for younger writers to break into.<\/p>\n<p><em>Slant,<\/em> says Gutterman, is going after these writers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/how-slant-news-hopes-to-change-online-journalism\/attachment\/20150721-amanda-gutterman-slant-54\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15690\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/20150721-Amanda-Gutterman-Slant-54.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"How Slant News Hopes to Change Online Journalism \" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a beautiful, professionally edited platform that\u2019s open to young diverse voices that can actually get paid for their work and have an editor who is able to optimize their content to perform online,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Gutterman deeply believes in her generation\u2019s ability to turn a profit\u2014she tells potential writers to investigate \u201cthe topics they talk about with their friends.\u201d She finds that a simple prompt elicits stories that mainstream publications are slow to pick up on, such as sexual assault on college campuses and what comes next in the fight for LGBT rights.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/locations\/new-york-city\/gramercy\">WeWork Gramercy<\/a> member comes to <em>Slant <\/em>with a strong pedigree. She\u2019s put in time at <em>The New Yorker<\/em>, as well as working directly with Arianna Huffington at <em>The Huffington Post<\/em>. There she found a model for leadership that she follows today.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanying Huffington on her tour for her latest book, <em>Thrive <\/em>(Gutterman is a big book person, citing <em>Thrive <\/em>and <em>The Lean Startup<\/em> as keys to her managerial success), Gutterman got to see how Huffington managed her most in-demand quality: time. What impressed her most was how Huffington made sure there was time for self-care.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/wework-creators\/how-slant-news-hopes-to-change-online-journalism\/attachment\/20150721-amanda-gutterman-slant-12\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-15694\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15694\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/20150721-Amanda-Gutterman-Slant-12.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"How Slant News Hopes to Change Online Journalism Amanda Gutterman\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How does Gutterman compensate? She has an exhaustive list, which she deems \u201csecret sauce,\u201d including, but by no means limited to, sleeping at least seven hours, eating healthy, exercising, psychotherapy, and avoiding what she calls &#8220;Ass in Seat Syndrome,\u201d where somebody stays in the office just to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>The work that goes into creating a new media organization is immense.
