Joseph Bien-Kahn recently hit a literary milestone: his one-year anniversary as a freelancer. Within the past year, the Oakland-based writer rode the <\/span>Baja 1000<\/a>, went behind the scenes with a bunch of <\/span>wrestlers<\/a>, and got <\/span>slapped in the face<\/a> by a Thai couple for body modification-purposes\u2014all in the name of journalism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest perk of journalism is that you get to learn about something, or do something, and get paid for it,\u201d says Bien-Kahn of these odd, fringe stories that are his forte. \u201cThe work becomes worth it\u2014even though it\u2019s tough, it\u2019s a lot of rejection, and it\u2019s not much pay\u2014because you get to see these parts of the world as you learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bien-Kahn now has a steady gig with Vice, but he admits to having a shaky freelance career at the beginning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always wanted to write, but I wasn\u2019t sure exactly how,\u201d he says. \u201cThere isn\u2019t a good guidebook for how to become a journalist without grad school.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many pitches later with not-so-much luck, a stumped Bien-Kahn reached out to a friend in New York for tips, one of the most helpful being: \u201cMake sure it\u2019s the first pitch in the editor\u2019s inbox.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m out on the West Coast, so I started waking up at 5 a.m. to pitch, so it could be there at 8,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

So how can you tell when a story is worth pitching?<\/p>\n

Taffy Brodesser-Akner<\/a>, who contributes to many publications including GQ<\/em> and the New York Times Magazine<\/em>, says pay attention to how you feel.<\/p>\n

According to Brodesser-Akner, \u201cWe all have a mechanism that goes huh\u00ad<\/em>\u2014like \u2018Huh, that\u2019s interesting.\u2019 Writers have many jobs. One of the jobs is to learn how to listen for the \u2018huh\u2019 and know that\u2019s your story.\u201d<\/p>\n

As an example, she cites her story <\/a>about The Bachelor\u2014<\/em>a story no one had thought to write a big, reported feature on previously\u2014and how that show has played out in culture.<\/p>\n

Brodesser-Akner is reminded of something every kid is taught in school: that each person is unique, and no two people think and behave in the same way.\u00a0Thanks to freelancing, Brodesser-Akner discovered that this lesson\u00a0isn\u2019t exactly true. And that just might be the key to good storytelling.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I learned from having ideas, and putting them out in the world, and receiving feedback from the world is that we\u2019re actually at our core the same,\u201d she says. \u201cThe same things make us laugh. The same things make us cry. My reactions to things are legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Devin Gordon<\/a>, the Senior Articles Editor at GQ<\/em>, looks for in a freelancer is \u201cSomeone who has an original sense of story and an ability to write an amazing sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gordon, Brodesser-Akner\u2019s editor, says that \u201cThere are a lot of good stories out there, but only a few special ones, and Taffy is good at telling the difference. She is breathtakingly funny. She has a very, very specific voice that I think you can tell the moment you\u2019re reading it. It\u2019s not enough to be good. You have to be singular.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brodesser-Akner only began freelancing five years ago, after she had been home with her oldest son for a year after he was born, realizing it was necessary financially to go back to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started writing personal essays because I was home with the baby,\u201d she says. \u201cI started doing it kind of knowing my life depended on it. I knew if I didn\u2019t do it well and quickly, I\u2019d have to go back to the office.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brodesser-Akner recalls advice she once received from Rob Brunner, the senior editor at Fast Company: \u201cA freelancer should always be good, nice, and on time. But if you\u2019re any two of those, you\u2019ll always work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rae Alexandra<\/a> has been freelancing for the past 13 years. She has written for many music-based publications and websites, such as Kerrang!<\/em>, NME.com, Rock Sound<\/em>, and JustinTimberlake.com\u2014\u201cwhich is hilarious,\u201d she says, \u201cgiven my years covering nothing but punk and hardcore bands.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Alexandra, \u201cMusic is the constant, but I\u2019ll also go where the paycheck is.\u201d She now writes mostly for SF Weekly<\/em>, as well as the Village Voice<\/em> and TeamRock.com, plus she also works with two authors: one whose focus is on holistic health and the other who is a neurologist writing a book about Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n

For writers testing the freelance water, Alexandra clearly practices what she preaches: \u201cbe on the lookout for work constantly<\/em>,\u201d she says. \u201cMy job at JustinTimberlake.com came about because of a chance meeting with the editor in the ladies room of a dive bar. You never know!\u201d<\/p>\n

Or, as absurd as it might sound, peep Craigslist. \u201cWhenever I think my bank balance is in jeopardy, I hit up Craigslist,\u201d says Alexandra. \u201cThere are a surprising number of good writing gigs on there. You just have to sift through the crap to find them.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just locking down gigs that defines a good freelancer. Alexandra stresses that \u201cconsistency, courtesy, and never, ever missing a deadline\u201d are must-have qualities.<\/p>\n

When asked what she has learned about herself from freelancing, Alexandra says, \u201cI\u2019ve learned that freedom and flexibility is more important to me than a steady paycheck and benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n

So now, Alexandra doesn\u2019t always have to deal with mornings and can sleep in. Bien-Kahn isn\u2019t totally chained to his computer\u2014he drives around the Bay as a Lyft driver part-time. And Brodesser-Akner?<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, I\u2019m going to take my kids for ice cream at about 2 o\u2019clock,\u201d she says. \u201cI always knew I\u2019d want to take them for ice cream at 2 o\u2019clock and hear about their day.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
