Armed with an extensive background in systems engineering and education, Jamalian became a co-founder of a children\u2019s learning company after one cold email.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, Jamalian was pursuing her Ph.D. in cognitive studies in education from Columbia University&#8217;s Teachers College\u00a0when she heard from Phyl Georgiou, one of co-founders of <a href=\"http:\/\/tiggly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tiggly<\/a>. Georgiou was working on an idea that would transform the way preschoolers play on iPads. Although Jamalian had a lot on her plate\u2014pursuing a post-doctorate\u00a0position in New York City and teaching a course at Teachers College at Columbia University\u00ad\u2014she was enthusiastic about starting a business with two people she hardly knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI liked academia, but that\u2019s not what I always envisioned myself doing,\u201d says Jamalian, who received her undergraduate degree in systems engineering at Simon Fraser University and a master\u2019s degree in instructional technology and media from Columbia University. \u201cI always wanted to start something new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began working with her two partners, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/members\/member-profile-tiggly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phyl Georgiou and Bart Clareman<\/a>, in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were all sort of strangers, and we weren\u2019t sure if this was going to work out,\u201d recalls Jamalian. \u201cWe had no salary for the first six months and we were working more than normal full-time hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But she said that the team forged ahead when they received a lot of positive responses from parents, kids, and even teachers. Jamalian knew there was a need for Tiggly when she heard from parents who were concerned about allowing their kids to play with digital tablets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever I talk about education, there\u2019s a public belief that there\u2019s always a wrong or right answer. It\u2019s always about testing and trying to find the answer,\u201d says Jamalian. \u201cWe use the word \u2018learning\u2019 instead at Tiggly because we believe we\u2019re giving kids the tools to learn instead of educating them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jamalian\u2019s love for creating new things began at an early age when she and her younger brother designed their own toys from whatever they could find.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/TechCrunch-Tiggly-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/TechCrunch-Tiggly-2.jpg?resize=2048%2C1366\" alt=\"TechCrunch Tiggly 2\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1366\" \/><\/a>\u201cMy brother was obsessed with globes, so we tried to find ways to memorize as many countries as we could,\u201d says Jamalian. \u201cHe was one year younger, so we always played together and found ways to make toys appealing to both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jamalian incorporates this philosophy when she and her cofounders think about new projects. She says they\u2019re \u201cobsessed\u201d to find new ways for kids to play and learn. Every week they visit a Brooklyn preschool and frequently consult their five-member \u201ckids advisory board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always ask them to bring their own iPads, ask them about the new toys they\u2019re playing with, what their favorite apps are and we play it with them,\u201d says Jamalian.<\/p>\n<p>A lot has changed since Tiggy first started, and Jamalian now helps manage a 20-person team.
