She had given all the specs, worked out all the details, and when she opened the bags she expected to see perforated circles in all of the bags. Instead, she saw perforated hexagons. Not knowing what to do, she got on Twitter and told the world, \u201cI love hexagons!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s a small anecdote that\u2019s endemic of Kathleen\u2019s style: obsessed with the details and ready to roll with the punches. Sienna Ray, founded on a kitchen counter top when she was working for Vancouver Magazine, started with an eagerness and a kick: Kathleen made a bag, then showed it to an editor of her\u2019s and said it should be featured in the magazine. The editor replied that she should have more than one bag. Kathleen took it to heart and one-upped her, making five different styles and getting them into five stores.\u00a0 While the bags are all different, they all share Kathleen\u2019s signature lining, a brightly colored feminine design that juts out as soon as one is opened. It\u2019s a bag that shows its personal touch in ways both loud and quiet.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"\/\/www.wework.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/20141203-Natalie-Kathleen-Sienna-Ray-22.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10329\" src=\"\/\/www.wework.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/20141203-Natalie-Kathleen-Sienna-Ray-22.jpg?resize=1280%2C853\" alt=\"-20141203 Natalie Kathleen Sienna Ray-22\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" data-wp-pid=\"10329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kathleen has been an athlete for as long she can remember: before Sienna Ray, before writing at Vancouver, she was both a SCUBA and ski instructor. Since starting Ray, she\u2019s been looking for the chance to incorporate that sporty side into her designs. This called for a new product, and she looked at hats as a \u201cchance to get back to her roots\u201d. These leather hats, which include a startling gold, are meant to invoke athleticism coming from the wearer, as opposed to a team. \u201cI wanted something in between a baseball cap and flat top hat\u201d, she says. This is enforced by the lack of logo: you\u2019d have to ask the wearer where they got that hat if you wanted to know. That\u2019s intentional on Kathleen\u2019s part: she prefers to pique people\u2019s curiosity, to \u201cget that desire for someone to want to know what it is\u201d, she says, rather than push her brand into people\u2019s faces.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While Sienna Ray is clearly her creation, it takes a village to raise a handbag or a hat. Kathleen has worked with both American and Chinese manufacturers, and while she is currently working with American ones, it wasn\u2019t always that way. It took the financial crisis of 2009 to open doors to smaller manufacturers for Sienna, before that they simply weren\u2019t interested in the fifty-bag runs. \u201cEven in New York now, it\u2019s tough, it\u2019s harder to sell in small quantities because it\u2019s expensive\u201d, she says. Once she was in, she was determined to stay in that market by making herself as needed as possible. A strong believer in \u201cpay it forward\u201d, Kathleen as clued in fellow quality small brands \u2014 the type that pay on time \u2014 to her strong connections.<\/p>\n<p>At the WeWork holiday market, Kathleen plans on expanding on her \u201cbusiness ethic of sharing things\u201d by supported a few other companies, including 41 Winks, a bedding company in which she has helped with branding work, and Red Head Cookies, the cookie brand of a fellow bagmaker who makes treats on the side to support her mother\u2019s retirement. \u201cThis is their first big holiday market,\u201d Kathleen notes, \u201cso I told them \u2018Hey, I\u2019ll put some cookies on my table!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.wework.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/20141203-Natalie-Kathleen-Sienna-Ray-17.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10330\" src=\"\/\/www.wework.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/20141203-Natalie-Kathleen-Sienna-Ray-17.jpg?resize=853%2C1280\" alt=\"-20141203 Natalie Kathleen Sienna Ray-17\" width=\"853\" height=\"1280\" data-wp-pid=\"10330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"finalnote\" style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Photographs by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenkallen.com\/\">Lauren Kallen<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One time when Natalie Kathleen, the one-woman dynamo behind Sienna Ray, was working on handbags for a summer collection, she was using perforated leathers.
