Where to find good coffee in London

London used to be a wasteland as far as good coffee was concerned. Now, however, highly trained baristas with a real passion for the bean are hard at work in independent cafés on most high streets. Javaficionados will have a wonderful time at this selection of coffee spots, supplied by celebrated roasteries like Ozone, Square Mile, and Monmouth, while foodies will go wild for the house-made sandwiches, cakes, and more that have become a staple of London coffee spots.

Flat White

Arguably the first antipodean café to open in the capital back in 2005, this place has educated Londoners about the joys of the flat white and spawned dozens of imitators. And there’s great people-watching from the bench outside.

Fleet River Bakery

At lunchtime, the line is out the door of this light-filled space, which is tucked away from the bustle of Holborn on historic Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Morning and afternoon, you’ll be free to drink your Monmouth coffee in peace, but don’t miss the house-made salads and soups.

Ozone Coffee Roasters

Take a break from sipping your single origin or blended bean goodness to check out the roaster at the foot of the stairs in the basement of this spacious, urban Tech City spot. The healthy all-day brunch menu is impressive too.

Paper and Cup

This café and bookshop offers training to the long-term unemployed and people recovering from addiction, as baristas and managers, so you it’s not just the great coffee and tasty treats that’ll give you a warm feeling in your tummy.

Look Mum No Hands!

Five bicycle mechanics are employed at this quirky Tech City café, but you don’t need to be a bicyclist to enjoy the brews from Square Mile coffee or the homemade pies.

Four Corners Café

The area around Waterloo station can feel like something of a no-man’s-land, but this friendly travel-themed joint is worth seeking out. Tea is from Yumchaa, coffee from Ozone, and if you bring in an old guidebook they don’t already have, your beverage is free.

Modern Society

Warning: your usual coffee shop will feel very bland in comparison with this stark café/boutique/gallery in the heart of trendy Shoreditch. With just a couple beverage options available, quality over quantity is the vibe here.
