Europe’s biggest travel search engine rises to unicorn status

Skyscanner, the world’s largest independent travel search engine, announced today a massive round of funding that brought it to unicorn status.

Slam-dunking the next level of fundraising, Skyscanner, the Edinburgh-based travel search engine, closed a $192 million round today. The company, which is expanding into new markets, is now worth $1.6 billion, the Financial Times reports.

“Skyscanner has enjoyed high double-digit growth rates for some years now,” says Skyscanner CEO Gareth Williams. “This financing round and our recent new hires allow us to build fantastic further tools for travelers.”

Skyscanner, which launched in 2003, is known as Scotland’s “tech titan.” It has 10 offices around the world, including its London office at WeWork Moorgate. It also has branches in Barcelona, Beijing, Budapest, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Miami, Shenzhen, Singapore, and Sofia.

Another big winner today is Import.io, a data-extracting company based in London’s WeWork Aldgate Tower. TechCrunch reports that the company raised $17.5 million in Series A funding.

Import.io, which launched in 2013, also has offices in San Francisco.
