But what exactly does an optimal space look like? In the&nbsp;<strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/tag\/science-of-space\" target=\"_blank\">Science of Space<\/a><\/strong>, we explore how the science of intentional design can turn any work environment into a holistic experience.<\/em><br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/eight-things-youll-find-in-every-wework\">WeWork spaces<\/a> are known for their sleek aesthetic and intentional design to promote community and productivity. Each location around the world features <a href=\"\/en-GB\/ideas\/wework-artwork-showcases-local-culture\">awe-inspiring art<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en-GB\/ideas\/staircase-design\">architecture<\/a> and a <a href=\"\/en-GB\/ideas\/essential-guide-activity-based-working\">variety of workspaces<\/a> so employees can do their best work in whichever setting they\u2019re most comfortable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/10\/MON_SAI_WINDOW_v1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66818\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/buildings\/1010-saint-catherine-st-w--montreal--QC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/buildings\/1010-saint-catherine-st-w--montreal--QC\">WeWork 1010 Saint-Catherine St W<\/a> in Montreal, Canada.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While photographs capture the energy of a space, they are available only after a building opens. What about before that? Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/a-guide-to-agile-real-estate\">agile companies move quickly<\/a>, they often want to make decisions about what office space to take even before they open, when they\u2019re being designed and constructed. WeWork needs to help them visualise the space so that they can picture their teams working there. This is where my team comes in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"visual-stories-of-spaces-that-dont-yet-exist\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visual stories of spaces that don\u2019t yet exist<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The visualisation team at WeWork is an in-house studio dedicated to creating digital images using a suite of software tools. At WeWork, our team begins work after a new location has been designed but not yet built. The renderings show how natural light will shine on surfaces, what furniture and flooring will actually be going in, and how real individuals will interact with one another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We complete our renderings three to six months before a WeWork location opens. That allows businesses to make decisions such as which space to take if they\u2019re looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/office-solutions-small-and-midsize-companies\">expand into a new city<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en-GB\/ideas\/enterprises-leveraging-wework-agile-real-estate\">move headquarters<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/enterprise-companies-benefit-from-wework\">house remote employees<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/10\/SNG_MYP_TERRACE_CROPPED_v1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66870\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/buildings\/9-battery-rd--singapore\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/buildings\/9-battery-rd--singapore\">WeWork 9 Battery Road<\/a> in Singapore.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We think of ourselves as a new breed of studio. Whereas other studios spend months producing a series of renderings for one client, our in-house team spends 10 days on four to seven renderings. We can do this because our team continues to optimise our process through automation, and we optimise for speed based on our team\u2019s structure; not only do we get more efficient, but we also get better at what we do. We have the chance to innovate on every aspect, from how we work to the structure of our team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"a-flat-structure-allows-us-to-innovate\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A flat structure allows us to innovate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the scope of our work is massive (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/locations\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/locations\">WeWork has more than 580 locations<\/a>), we must move fast. The old way of running a studio just doesn\u2019t cut it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A traditional studio typically has a few junior, mid-level and senior artists responsible for individual parts of production. They all report to one creative director who leads the project.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/10\/SAN_WES_STAIR-1_v2-571x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66877\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/buildings\/155-west-st--johannesburg--GP\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/buildings\/155-west-st--johannesburg--GP\">WeWork 155 West<\/a> in Johannesburg, South Africa.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In place of this hierarchy, my team has a flat structure. We empower every artist on our team to become experts on all parts of a project, from lighting to 3D modelling to post-production. Instead of a creative director, there is a creative manager who provides tutorials on different parts of production. Each artist can pick what element of a project they would like to work on. They switch responsibilities from project to project to gain a wide range of expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than waiting on approvals from one person at the top of the hierarchy, team members are free to make decisions on their own. That allows them to work quickly. By innovating through optimising our process, and by trusting our artists, we stay agile and productive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"automating-what-we-can\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Automating what we can<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Automation is central to moving fast in all parts of a business. That\u2019s true even if you\u2019re creating bespoke digital images.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GIF\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/364096668?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Watch how parts of the 3D rendering are created automatically.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our team works out what takes too long in the process of creating renderings and then solves it. Since we produce renderings of interior WeWork spaces, we\u2019ve been able to build up a library of elements that we use in every project. Using Railclone software, we\u2019ve 3D-modelled and created a central library of building elements such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/office-entrances\">exteriors<\/a>, flooring, security cameras, smoke detectors, exit signs, shopfronts, <a href=\"\/en-GB\/ideas\/10-conference-rooms\">conference rooms<\/a> and even neon art. With this clean library, we can drag and drop these items into separate projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/10\/MON_SAI_NEON_v1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66888\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/buildings\/1010-saint-catherine-st-w--montreal--QC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/en-GB\/buildings\/1010-saint-catherine-st-w--montreal--QC\">WeWork 1010 Saint-Catherine St W<\/a> in Montreal, Canada.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With the basics of a building automated, we can focus on the details that can bring a space to life: the furniture, architectural finishings and lighting. Our team can dedicate time to perfecting these artistic elements. We\u2019ll spend a full day modelling, for example, a chair, ottoman or side table that we\u2019ll use repeatedly. We have the chance to make sure this chair is the most perfect chair possible. That makes our renderings more lifelike and more able to tell the story of the space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"taking-care-to-create-global-human-renderings\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Taking care to create global, human renderings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing I\u2019m most proud of is the diversity we feature in our images.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We believe that people are the most important part of a space; the way people use the space is critical to the story we\u2019re telling. That\u2019s why we put a lot of time and care into this part of a rendering. Our team scouts colleagues and photographs them in natural light, interacting with their surroundings. There\u2019s no green screen.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By populating our renderings with people who reflect the makeup of our global population, we hope that anyone, anywhere in the world, will see themselves reflected \u2013 and welcome \u2013 in our settings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"the-results\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The results<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we look at our renderings next to a photograph of the space six months later, we often find that the two look strikingly similar. When done well, they can display the energy of something that does not yet exist. They can transport a viewer into a space where they may very well spend the majority of their waking hours in the future. Businesses can make decisions about where to have an office even before a space is fully constructed.
